I can get pthreads working on Solaris next week if necessary. Too busy this week though, so I wouldn't be able to work on it until next Monday.

This doesn't sound encouraging. But I'll give it a try.... Is there a reason to assume that it won't work?

In the meantime, I'd like to get something going. From your response and Russel Stuart's, I gather that I can disable this test and proceed -- so I'll do that first. Then, once I have a working system to compare against, I'll go back and retry it with threads enabled.
