Aha. This seems fairly relevant:

(I didn't know ssh has that facility.) You might be able to do
something like what I want with a wrapper command and
SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND. I'll have to think about it a bit. In any
case, if we can come up with a good solution that would work well in a
lot of the common cases, it might be nice to distribute that with
duplicity, or at least document it in the FAQ.
