[Duplicity-talk] Encrypting backups?

I stumbled across duplicity this morning looking for serious backup software. It looks like this is a serious undertaking and am glad to see it. I do have one question though: Isn't altering a file for backup, in this case encrypting, a bad idea?? If you lose everything doesnt' depending on an altered file lessen your chances for recovery?

I'd be very interested top hear if this is -not- an issue & why.
