Byte compiling

gives

    This functionality has been obsolete for more than 10 years already
    and will be removed soon.  See (elisp)Backquote in the manual.

But that node in the elisp manual doesn't describe the old syntax or
what, if anything, you have to do to stop "removed soon" from breaking
your code.

AFAIK, this problem has been fixed a little while back.
