show-paren-mode is broken:

emacs -Q
M-x show-paren-mode RET
insert:
(adsf)
the point is after the closing paren.
both parens are highlighted (this is the correct behavior).
now, do this:
C-b C-b RET C-e
now the buffer contains this:

(asd
f)

the cursor is after the closing paren.
only the closing paren is highlighted, _NOT_ the opening paren.
