Hm.  I see the file name shadow flicker on and off with every
keystroke I type in the minibuffer.

After doing a binary search of my ~/.emacs file, I've found the
problem: I customized the option "Minibuffer Prompt Properties" so
that the prompt is both read-only and inviolable.  This seems to break
the file name shadowing.
