    I wanted the defence partly to have a better chance of being able to
    debug such things, not to sweep them under the carpet.  Surely they
    need fixing?

This defense will not sweep them under the carpet.  It tells the user
very clearly that there was an error in redisplay.  The fact that
Emacs does not crash may help users figure out how to reproduce the
problem.
