With your patch, Emacs can look in one directory and one file.
Wouldn't it be cool if Emacs could look in several directories and
several files?
I think that's what Eli meant.
Also, one variable, containing a list of files/directories, should be
good enough: the code can check, for each entry, whether it's a file
or a directory, and then do the right thing.
