choose radix for control and non displayable characters

Hi,

i  have looked for  a mean  to change  the radix  of control  characters and
characters that are  not displayable with the current  fontset, but it seems
that it is hard-coded (xdisp.c / get_next_display_element() ?).

I think it is some way inconsistent  as i can choose the radix for the input
of quoted characters with read-quoted-char-radix.

Could  someone consider  about  to add  a  variable to  choose that  display
radix ? It is easily feasible ?
