Sorry to be unclear, "it" refers to the text entry box in the
fileselection widget (the old GTK dialog).
If using that text entry box always opens existing files read-only,
even if you can write them, that is a bug. Can you fix the bug?
But I can just as well
make it so the user can enter file names there,
I don't follow.
it is just for the
new dialog we need to distinguish between open old and open new file.
Opening an old file should make the buffer writable, if the file is
writable, in both the old dialog and the new dialog.
