menu-item alignment

Attached is how the Widget part of the the Custom menu-bar menu looks on my
system.

It would be an improvement if the [] and [X] toggle markers could somehow
take up the same horizontal space, in spite of using a proportional font.
I'm not sure if that is exactly possible, but perhaps a space character
could be added to [] to at least improve the alignment a bit.

Similarly, although the menu items without a toggle marker are indented,
they are not indented enough to be aligned with the toggle-mark item names
(in this font). Again, it might not be possible to fix this for all fonts,
but perhaps some improvement could be made.
