so either read-key-sequence fails there, or Stefan was wrong about it
working right on the trunk (where it returns [2234])... Or I just
don't understand anything anymore :-)

The only difference is that Emacs internal encoding is no longer emacs-mule, but utf-8. So the code points just happen to coincide in this case.
