I think the convention is to quote symbols like `blargh' (which can look
slightly ugly sometimes, but at least it gets the point across).

E.g., see the docstring for `set-face-attribute'.

`There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
 Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.'
