In GNU Emacs 23.0.60, a visible-to-users font now succeeds!
(After the merge, the 10x20 font did not.)

In the `Misc' sub menu, mouse-set-font (<S-down-mouse-1>) succeeds as
it should in a short test:

  for 9x15

  for 10x20

  for 11x18

and in the `Courier' sub menu:

  for 12

  for 24

which appear in x-fixed-font-alist in all lower case; I checked with
C-u C-x = (what-cursor-position with a universal-argument) which
provided the mix.

My default for `-Q -D' (.i.e., `--quick --basic-display') is
which may be one of
which is also in x-fixed-font-alist

Interestingly, as an argument when starting,
    -fn '-Misc-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--20-120-100-100-C-90-ISO8859-1'
"is not defined" but these are:
     -fn '-Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--14-100-100-100-M-90-ISO8859-1'
     -fn '-Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--34-240-100-100-M-200-ISO8859-1'

Today's GNU Emacs CVS snapshot, Mon, 2008 Feb 18 10:46 UTC
GNU Emacs (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.5)
built by evaluating

      (cd "/usr/local/src/emacs/")
      (compile "time make"))

and started with

     /usr/local/src/emacs/src/emacs -Q -D

Thank you.
