Metacity is the default GNOME window manager, and GNOME is by far the
most used of the two official GNU desktop environments (the other being
GNUstep). So ignoring Metacity defaults for choosing Emacs bindings is
    not a smart move.

M-SPC is an important Emacs command, and has been since long before
Metacity existed. It was a mistake to set up the Metacity defaults to
conflict with Emacs commands, but they don't listen to the Emacs
developers much.

Metacity interferes with a number of Emacs key bindings; Emacs users
just have to customize it.
