Right, but users tend to specify weight and slant with xlfd descriptors, and probably wouldn't be surprised to have an omitted slant or weight interpreted as a wildcard, while fcname seems to encourage their omission for normal fonts: ie users expect "Courier-12" to be equivalent to "Courier-12:weight=normal:slant=normal", not "Courier-12:weight=*:slant=*".
