Please take a look at my recent mail with the subject "Accumulated
fontset definition tweaks for testing". I have come up with fixes for
all my display problems in the Emacs Lisp libraries. The email lists
the various problems I found in "fontset.el".

Does the xfont driver continue to work if a person specifies "xft" as
the font backend? If it does, then I think that will be okay. If it
doesn't then the ftfont driver should continue to support PCF fonts
alongside TrueType fonts, for consistency with other applications.
