You have to quote the backslash with another backslash (the lisp reader
interprets it special in strings): "address@hidden \\w\\n$".

How about:

if [ "x$EMACS" = xt ]; then
   # set up your prompt for M-x shell.
   # fancy prompt for real terminals.

in ~/.bashrc.
