Yes, unless the server is called "server" and the server
authentication file is at its default location, ~/.emacs.d/server/

That "automatic fallback" is the one above: defaulting to "server".

  server-host is a variable defined in `server.el'.
  Its value is nil

  Documentation:
  The name or IP address to use as host address of the server process.
  If set, the server accepts remote connections; otherwise it is local.
