Originally it was simply for settings which are specific to the client rather than to the server (e.g. ~/.Xdefaults could contain filenames, whereas having them in the xrdb database wouldn't make much sense). Nowadays this would also make a lot of sense for font names since fontconfig and friends handle fonts on the client side, so the server can't know which fonts are avail to which clients. Stefan
