FWIW, I had exactly the same problem (especially with strong ambient
light) -- so I did similar changes:

 font-lock-string-face:        brown
 font-lock-variable-name-face: dark orange
 font-lock-comment-face:       dark blue

I seem to focus much on comments whereas I don't seem to care very much for
builtins :-)

I tried your changes and it definitely gets a +1 from me (although I'll
stick to my changes because of the comments).
