Well, we like our code as clean as possible, without compatibility hacks
(neither for XEmacs nor for older Emacsen). But we also want to avoid
forking between a package's "external" version and Emacs's own, so we
accept compatibility code. The only case where we've been known to be
more reticent is when the compatibility code is in a separate file, in
which case it seems easy enough to keep the file outside of Emacs.
