If it's immaterial (and I agree it is), the buffer should remain
multibyte.  We should IMO set buffers unibyte only if we have a very
good reason for that, because doing that opens subtle loopholes we are
better off without.  Lately, there are less and less "good reasons"
for using unibyte buffers, which is a Good Thing.
