It doesn't work either.  The "eval" command interprets *, ?, [...],
and blanks after the parameter expansion for $CPPFLAGS, but it does
not strip quotes/escapes in the result of the parameter expansion.  So
you cannot put quotes in the value of CPPFLAGS.
