You have now `completion-in-region-function' (without "s") which is by
default bound to `completion--in-region'.
You can create your own function and bind
`completion-in-region-function' to it.
This will allow `completion-at-point', `completing-read-multiple' to use
your function.
It is what helm does, it is really nice feature.
