.gitignore has been around since 1999, I suppose for Git copies of the repositories. Perhaps that contributed to the confusion.
The new .gitignore looks a lot like the old .bzrignore, but it's not the same, as I removed stuff that looked to me like it was obsolete (e.g., configure.lineno, src/_gdbinit) and refactored for simplicity (e.g., *.log). I made some mistakes in that, which have been repaired (and most likely more repairs are needed) but it seemed like a good time for a fresh start.
