I'm sure it can be made to work, with enough work.  But currently

    M-x grep RET grep foo-bar {emacs,elpa}/**/*.el RET

works pretty well, for *very* little effort.

Sure. In no way I'm trying to say that having to implement the above would be much of a benefit by itself.

It's a cost, for having a modern-ish import system.
