Yeah, I'm fine with changing it, if the backward compatibility is not a problem.
- The ambiguity shows up not only in the source docstring, but also in the *formatted* docstring after this quoting has been removed (e.g. regexp to recognize `...' xrefs and highlight them).
Maybe we should have gone ahead with the original proposal, and handle the escaping in font-lock. Then `substitute-command-keys' would honor \\=, but won't remove it from the docstring.
