Yeah, I'm fine with changing it, if the backward compatibility is not a 
problem.

Maybe we should have gone ahead with the original proposal, and handle 
the escaping in font-lock. Then `substitute-command-keys' would honor 
\\=, but won't remove it from the docstring.
