Do people actually use Emacs with windows so wide?

Do you mean frames? The minibuffer spans the whole frame.

My screen is wide, but having more than 80 columns in Emacs would
be a screw, so I tell Emacs that the screen is 80 columns wide.

split-window-horizontally is very handy.

My frames are full screen usually, which comes out to ~220 columns.
