For this reasons, I have an (untracked) ChangeLog file in all
my repositories. This way I can use C-x 4 a to write a ChangeLog entry
in the "good old way" and then VC will automatically copy that data into
the *VC-Log* buffer for me to commit it.

I had a hack which made C-x 4 a insert that text directly into *VC-Log*
but in the end I found it didn't work so well: it didn't let me save the
intermediate commit message and return to it later so it worked OK for
small simple changes, but for larger commits with larger diffs I found it
rather inconvenient.
