Yes, this irritates me too.

Would you please try out the following patch.  It entirely cuts out the
one second pause on all "break commands" (whatever they might be).
Hopefully there aren't any unwanted side effects.

Just set the new customisable variable to nil, and off you go!

The patch is based on today's master branch.
