How so? It doesn't get in my way. Quite the contrary - I appreciate
it for editing code.

Please give a recipe, if you're really interested in discussing this
again. And in that case, please start a new thread for it.

Not the same thing at all. In the wider world, behaviors of/like
both `delete-selection-mode' and shift-selection are on by
default (and they are typically all that is available).
