I'm not sure what the ideal behavior would be; for this particular case, I 
think the best would likely be for the number to be displayed one line below, 
and no number to be displayed on the yellow line.  That is, instead of this:

1 test
2 <thick yellow line>
  test
3 test

… I'd rather see this:

1 test
  <thin yellow line>
2 test
3 test
