Thanks. One little question:

-    (while (re-search-forward "\\([ \t]*\n[ \t]*\\)+" nil t)
+    (while (re-search-forward "[ \t]*\\(?:\n[ \t]*\\)+" nil t)
       (replace-match " "))

Wouldn't it be better to use "[ \t]*\n[ \t\n]*"?
