Hmm... wait, after "git gc" the figure is even more favorable:
% du -sh elpa/.git/. /var/www/html/packages/.
144M elpa/.git/.
918M /var/www/html/packages/.
%
IOW, the main problem with size is the ELPA archive itself rather than
the Git repository.
