I missed this post originally, so didn't comment back then. I only really want this on for prog-mode (and really, I only find it helpful when writing Lisp; I'm neutral about it in other languages). It's not that big a deal to me either way though; whatever the default is, I'll just customize things to my liking.
That said, I also use electric-pair-mode under prog-mode, but customize it to be inactive inside strings and comments. My ideal would be for show-paren-mode to be active only in the parts of buffers where I have electric-pair-mode active, but that would take quite a bit more work. (This is just for context about how I use things, not to suggest that this should be added to show-paren-mode anytime soon.)
