As a quick idea, would it make sense to allow `auto-save-default' to be a function that is called whenever the decision is to be made whether or not a buffer should be auto-saved?

salv-mode saves buffers to their visited files by calling
save-buffer. It doesn't have anything to do with "auto-save" to backup files.
