btw in my case i am in either kb mode or gui mode; i do not combine
them as that is an accessibility issue.

btw there is at least one case where you want gui when you invoked the
command kb, and kb when you invoked it gui: type-break.el.  what it
/should/ do in its ... hook? is find out if you are /currently/ using
kb or gui, then match that.
