Yes, it does look much better (does it work as well with HTML?). So there
is a bug in the LaTeX exporter apparently. However, I tried the LaTeX
fragments approach in section 11.3 of the manual and it works fine with
both LaTeX and HTML (but you have to turn the LaTeX option on: exporting
to HTML then preprocesses the LaTeX fragments to produce images that can
then be included in the HTML file):
