I solve this problem in my tables by using a table length-constraining
parameter:
| my table | long-cell |
| | <10> |
| | tons of text that should be cut off at a reasonable length (just
10 chars) and not run on forever |
| |
|
produces:

| | <10> |
| | tons of te |
