Sure, but what about this:
This is a sentence with a footnote attached to it.[fn:: This footnote 
belongs to the preceding sentence, doesn't it?]

Absolutely, I'm just asking what can be changed afterwards, maybe by 
providing an extended inline quotes syntax or so.
