I see.
This corresponds to

(defface org-beamer-tag '((t (:box (:line-width 1 :color "grey40"))))
  "The special face for beamer tags."
  :group 'org-export-beamer)

in the code.

This :box spec is correct, according to the manual.
So, something is broken on Emacs master :shrug:.
