I wasn't thinking about "is there a problem if it's not local" (I know
that the answer is generally "yes"), but rather "is TMP or TMPDIR often
pointing to a non-local directory".
As I said, I don't know what's the answer. But since sticking
to /tmp sidesteps the whole question, it's probably better to do that,
indeed.
