To me, it would be "yet another markup", which we'd probably need
to design (I doubt the wiki markups would address the needs of
writing documentation well enough), document, and implement
(i.e. writing a converter to Texinfo).

The only benefit is that it would look a bit more like plain ascii
and that it wouldn't be as flexible as Texinfo and would require
more work from us.  Doesn't sound like a win to me.

I agree that writing HTML is generally a bit too painful, but I don't
think Texinfo suffers in the same way, so the need for a lighterweight
markup language is significantly reduced.
