In GNU Emacs 21.3.50.54 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.0.2)
  of 2003-10-06 on defun.localdomain
 configured using `configure '--with-gtk''

I see the same as Lute: `ruler-mode' doesn't work if there's a fringe
in both sides (the default).  It works if theres no fringe or one
fringe (at either side).
