    I hope it will make it possible to deal with:
    - error messages that span more than one line
    - error messages that do not start at column 0
    - error messages where the filename is only printed once per file
      and where nesting may occur.

I think we can live without these features, but a rewrite is needed for
other reasons.  If it makes these things easy to do, and you want to do
them, I don't object as long as it doesn't add a lot of complexity.
