Of course, but in what case would single escape+newline mean something
else? It isn't just for a statement continuation anyhow; I also had
in mind broken strings.
The command can't be unambiguously correct in its treatment of
whitespace, so I don't think it's worth complication for potential
pathological cases. If it deletes an extra character, you just
re-type it. I suppose you could even put in an undo boundary.
