   You assume, so it seems, that a single Emacs-filled screen is enough
   for what I do with Emacs ;-) That assumption doesn't hold in my case,
   so I need to use several, partially overlapping, frames.

Why do you need /overlapping/ frames?  Ratpoison lets does you use
multiple frames, but while it will let you look at frames
side-by-side (so they are not in fact /always/ maximized, just
usually), it does always avoid overlapping.
