I think the patch is good.  It gets rid of the "tty test" and replaces it
with a more appropriate test which depends on the number of colors, which
is indeed what we want to test.  The tty test was just an indirect way to
test the number of colors and nowadays with tty supporting 256 colors this
test is sometimes too pessimistic.

I.e. the patch doesn't make much of a difference other than the fact that
it makes thing work The Right Way.
