I don't think the new dialog is worse as soon as you figured out that
Ctrl-L brings up a dialog that allows to type in the filename. I agree
that this entry shouldn't be hidden.
If you are struggling with the fact that you can't distinguish files
and directories, you are simply missing icons. This can be fixed by
using an appropriate icon theme or by updating to gtk+ version 2.4.4.
The latter offers icons in the filechooser even if no icon theme is
being used.
